Enzo Maresca admitted he was simply “happy” after Chelsea supporters sang his name following the club’s 3–1 Carabao Cup quarterfinal victory away at Cardiff City.

The Chelsea boss had faced heavy attention in recent days after describing the 48 hours before the Everton match as his “worst” period at Stamford Bridge, sparking speculation about frustration behind the scenes. But speaking after the win, Maresca focused on the achievement — and the connection with the fans.

“I’m just happy. We’re going to play another semifinal and I think it’s what the fans deserve,” he said after celebrating at full-time as supporters serenaded him.

Maresca also made it clear he has not held discussions with club executives about his recent comments, insisting his focus has been purely on preparing the team.

Chelsea’s substitutes turn the tie

Chelsea needed second-half impact to settle the match, and it came from the bench. Alejandro Garnacho scored twice, while fellow substitute Pedro Neto also found the net as Chelsea pulled away late on.

The manager praised the professionalism required in cup fixtures against lower-league opposition, describing them as dangerous if approached casually.

“These are the kind of games I fall in love with the players even more, because it’s easy to slip,” Maresca explained, warning that shocks happen every season when big teams underestimate difficult ties.

Injury update ahead of Newcastle

Maresca confirmed that Brazilian winger Estêvão will miss Chelsea’s next match against Newcastle due to a minor muscle problem that kept him out of the Cardiff game.

Cardiff’s late hope, then heartbreak

Cardiff City briefly reignited the contest when David Turnbull equalised with a strong diving header with around 15 minutes remaining, giving the home crowd real belief.

However, Chelsea’s quality and depth showed in the closing stages, and Cardiff boss Brian Barry-Murphy admitted the goal raised hopes before the visitors took control again.

“It’s probably just the hope that kills you when you score,” he said, praising his team’s performance and the supporters who stayed behind them even after Chelsea went 3–1 up.

Chelsea now move into the Carabao Cup semifinals, with attention quickly turning to their upcoming league clash with Newcastle.
